略
Part 2
表示“抓住”类的动词:seize, grasp, grip , take hold of
(1)Fear gripped her heart.
(2)Jealousy seized her.
(3)A wild joy took hold of her.
(4)A feeling of panic seized her.
(5)Anxiety tore her into pieces.
(6)Anger and bitterness covered upon me for weeks.
Part 3
于是,动词通常是get the better of或者get the best of(都表示“胜过”)。
He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him. 在这句里,就用到了get the better of 的结构,表示“胜过”。
(1)Enthusiasm gets the better of me.
(2)Boredom often gets the best of them.
(3)His curiosity got the better of him .
Part 4
(1)Worrying deprived him of sleep.
(2)Excitement deprived me of all power of speech.
(3)Astonishment and horror oppressed her.
(4)Anger and bitterness had preyed upon me continually.
Part 5
(1)Happiness crawls up to the tips of his brows.
(2)A slight feeling of fear slowly crept on him.
(3)Self-doubt began to gnaw away at her confidence.
(4)Fear swallowed her.
Part 6
(1)Joy shone from his brow.
(2)Happiness radiates from her face.
(3)Smile spread across his face.
(4)She has been in a dark mood this week.
(5)His face clouded over when he heard the news.
Part 7
(1)Grief bears heavily on her.
(2)He was burdened with worries
(3)The manager carried his anger.
(4)After I lost my temper,I felt lighter.
(5)Unburdening herself of her anger gave her a sense of relief.
Part 8
常见的动词有:涌出(well up),surge(涌动 )甚至sweep (冲;卷 ),有时fill/brim/take possession of (注满/盛满 / 占满 )容器,有时overflow/well(漫出/溢出)容器,在高温下甚至会boil(沸腾) .
(1)Panic surged up within him .
(2)The terrible scene filled her with fear.
(3)A wave of panic swept over her.
(4)The loneliness and grief comes in waves.
(1)His heart is overflowing with joy.
(2)I could feel anger boiling up inside me.
(3)He was brimming with sorrow when she left him .
A wave of satisfaction and pride surged up inside Mrs. Meredith as John explained his idea.
After Bernard learned about John’s idea, gratitude obviously got the better of this poor boy, and moistened his eyes.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn't get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Berlin thought it was a good idea.

Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa.
____________________________________
Berlin thought it was a good idea. When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather’s house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. Jack said, “What kind of tree should we pick for the walking stick?” Berlin thought for a moment and said, “I think we should choose a straight tree, so no knots will scratch grandpa’s hands.” Jack nodded his head in agreement. They found a straight tree and set to work. They cut the tree down, and with a knife they took the bark off. It was a wonderful tree, which was smooth and was just of the right size. They thought grandpa would love it.
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. When grandpa took the cane, his hands shook with joy, thinking, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack said, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods.” Grandpa smiled and decided to give it a try so as not to make his grandchildren disappointed. He held the cane in his right hand and the arm of his chair in his left hand. He stood up with strength on his legs. Everyone was surprised and excited to see grandpa stand up. At that moment, Jack noticed a tear coming from the corner of his grandfather’s eye.

The Christmas Spirit Strikes Again
I always dreamed of making a big surprise of a lifetime. Thanks to a little determination, some luck, and a generous helping of Christmas Spirit, my dream became a reality.
My family is Canadian, although my sister moved down to Australia a few years ago to study. She was graduating just before Christmas, but due to my own scholarly schedule back home, I would be unable to make it down in time for her graduation. She was understandably disappointed, and I felt guilty that I wasn’t able to be there for her on this special occasions.
While I was talking to my professor the week before my sister’s graduation, she commented, “Well, if you want to go, just go ahead!" I couldn’t believe my luck! I nearly jumped for joy. “Just make sure you get permission from administrator (行政主管),” she added. My heart sank. The administration at my school was infamous for denying any sort of time-off requests. I almost didn’t bother asking, because I knew it would be a waste of time. But something in me decided to try, just in case. Maybe it was the hope that the Christmas Spirit would somehow affects the administrator at this time of year. When I returned home to check the reply in my inbox, I steeled myself for disappointment. I held my breath, opened the e-mail, and started to read. And re-read, just to make sure I’d understood. Approval? I couldn’t believe my luck!
Immediately, I called the airline. Unexpectedly, even during the busy Christmas season, I was able to change my ticket to arrive the day before my sister’s graduation. With news this fantastic, I was bursting to tell my sister. But, fingers on the dial((拨号盘), I paused. Wouldn’t it be much more fantastic if I could surprise her? What a state of shock she would be in! Slowly a great idea came to my mind. I decided a much more dramatic arrival than just a ring of the doorbell. What if I couldn’t arrive in a box?
I started to plot.

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I settled for a bedside table with lockable drawers, a safe place to keep my private stuff.
We went to the charity shop where we found an old dark one. It didn’t look too cool, but I thought that I would paint it to make it look better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out. I felt something stuck to the back. I reached in all the way, and guess what? A sealed bag with some papers in it.
When I opened the bag, I realized that the papers were official documents. And, wrapped in them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!
“Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out to be a will. Some old lady was leaving her savings for her son and grandchildren.
My mind was going crazy. Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever? With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. Who knows?
I began counting. When I reached a thousand dollars, my mother was knocking on my bedroom door. I quickly closed the drawer with the money in it.
“Do you want some help? Is everything all right?” she asked.
No, everything was not right. Actually, my stomach was growling (低吼).
“I’m okay,” I lied.
When my mother left my room, I lay on my bed, starting thinking. What a dilemma (窘境)! I wished there were some one I could talk with. Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and my family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, if I shared it...right? Thoughts ran through my mind. But I really didn’t need someone else to give me the answer.

I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom.
___________________________
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find the family’s telephone number.
___________________________
I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom. When my parents saw what I had found in the drawer they were wide-eyed and speechless! Then, they read the papers carefully and were moved to tears. When they asked, “What should we do?” I said, “Let’s take it back to the store and find her family.” My father nodded with a smile on his face and my mother hugged me warmly, saying “You are my pride, dear.” I felt very happy because I already knew right from wrong. We collected all the money and papers at once, putting them in the drawer. We rushed to the charity shop with the drawer in the hope to find the owner as soon as possible.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find the family’s telephone number. Within a few minutes, the family all came over. When I showed them what I had found in the drawer, they couldn’t believe their eyes. The parents had tears in their eyes. They were still sad about the lady’s death and the father had just lost his job. It was easy to see that my act of honesty gave them hope. They showed me sincere gratitude from the bottom of their hearts. In fact, I had never felt better before. No new bicycle could have made me felt as good about myself as I felt that day because I passed a very important test—a lost and found test of my own character.

It’s a beautiful sunny day. The Bonds boarded their boat for a carefree day trip to Dove Island for some fishing as a family custom. Thomas Bond, a 30-year-old construction worker, loved the sport, especially catching bass (鲈鱼) and had impressed on his oldest daughter, Lizzy, a love of the outdoors, teaching her how to bait (下诱饵) a hook and cast a line and brave the waves.
The family spent the day fishing in the vast ocean, and then left the island in the early evening. Upon setting off from the shore, they found thick fog rolling in. Lizzy fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Molly, at a table on the boat’s lower deck (甲板). Their father’s sharp orders woke her up: “Get out of the boat. The boat’s sinking!” Lizzy pushed her sister into the cold, dark water. Both girls wore life jackets. The adults did not. The girls were followed by their mother, Petra Bond, who was expecting a baby at that time. Within seconds, the boat was damaged and was left just the tip of its bow in the air.
Looking into the faces of her father, mother, and sister, Lizzy wasn’t frightened. After some time, her father told them he would swim for help. “I’ll be back,” he said before disappearing into the darkness.
“Dad is like the superhero to me. I believe he will get help to rescue us,” Lizzy said to herself. After some time, her mother became quiet and stopped swimming. Lizzy wrapped a rope around her mother’s chest and tied her to the boat so she wouldn’t float away. Then her sister fell quiet too and she stayed beside her.
To keep herself awake, Lizzy daydreamed about what they would do after they were rescued. They would stay in a hotel, order room service, and lie comfortably under the blankets in bed, cozy and warm.

Shrieking Toad and Dancing Ant
Kids got nicknames at a summer camp, and mine is Shrieking Toad I guess it was my fault that I couldn't get a cool one.
A bunch of us campers were on our first nature walk. When we broke for lunch, we sat down on logs. I was on my nuts when a tree frog dropped onto my shirt from the branches above. I shrieked. It was totally unconscious and I didn't even know I could make a sound like that. Most kids forgot about it except Stan. Whenever I walked by, he'd shout, “Shrieking Toad, show us how you can hop!” I corrected him that it had been an eastern gray tree frog, not a toad, but that just made things worse.
Three days later, Counselor Matt announced we would be paired for a treasure hunt. Excited whispers spread through the camp. But when he read “Jay and Stan” as a team, my nerves got completely fried. Stan shouted, “Great! Shrieking Toad!” Then he called to the group, and I went red at what came out of his mouth. “Guys, if mosquitoes are bugging you, ask Shrieking Toad to eat them. Toads love bugs!” Kids roared with laughter.
After all the teams wandered off, Stan and I were alone. Then I had a great idea, surprising myself that I hadn't thought of it earlier. I suggested we split up so as to have a better chance of finding treasures. “Yeah, I'd better do what I'm toad (told).” Stan laughed and set off.
Ten minutes later, I heard something that reminded me of myself a few days ago. I ran toward the sound. I never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Stan was jumping around near a mud pool like a monkey, shrieking and yelling something that sounded jumping around near a mud pool like a monkey, shrieking and yelling something that sounded like “Dance! Dance!” Seeing him scratching at his body and hitting at his clothes made me realize what he was really saying: “Ants! Ants!”

Para 1:
I rushed towards Stan and tried to help him. He was hitting his clothes violently. I did what must be done. I pulled him into a mud pool. He was shocked at first, and then he must have realized why I did it. The ants went away. Since Stan and I were both covered in mud, we decided to head back. “I guess you’re going to have a pretty good story for everyone,” Stan said awkwardly. “Yeah, I guess so. You’ll probably be known as Dancing Ant from now on.”
Para 2:
That night, we all routinely sat around the campfire and I saw Stan's worry as clear as daylight. I knew how it felt to be teased; it wasn’t fun. I could see Stan’s worry which then turned into surprise. The next day when I was picked for a basketball team, someone called, “Unfair! Shrieking Toad’s a natural jumper!” Stan shouted, “Knock it off, guys. His name is Jay.” I wouldn’t have minded being given a cool nickname. But being known as plain “Jay”, and Stan’s friend, turned out to be cool too.

After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an object that we both remembered clearly. It was my very first bicycle. My mind told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!
My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, “Your own car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (踏板) so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because I refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.
After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there.
The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an omnipotent (全能的) person as my dad.
We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn’t fell. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle.

I turned around and found my dad was not behind. I was so scared I felt like I was going to fall at any moment. Sure enough, after shaking my body several times, I fell to the ground. I was very angry with my father why let go of my hand and let me ride alone. My father smiled and said to me: "It's OK, stick to it for a while." Then he started to teach me how to keep my center of gravity in balance. I learned the skills my father taught me, and repeated the practice several times.
I started to pedal and the bicycle moved. The bicycle moved when I pressed on the pedals. I rode for some distance and I felt my body was in balance. I felt that I could ride independently slowly, while my father was cheering for me. Finally I could ride a bike just like a free bird flying happily in the air.

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?
My teenage years had been insane. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around. Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my hectic teenage years I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn’t been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in Januaty. In the climax of my match, I jolted my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine. I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next morning.
I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain. My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity, the doctor walked in to examine my X-rays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said, There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this yearns tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back." My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.
Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to practices for the season.Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy. I asked myself, "Am I going to be out of shape? Should I even play this year? I probably won't have a successful season. "
From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.

I am Sadie. I love oceans, especially the one near my grandma's house with beautiful shells. Why? That's what I am about to tell you.
It all started when my parents porced a few weeks ago. I had remained silent since then. So my mother decided to send me to Florida to live with my grandma.
On the way to my grandma’s house, my mother said, “Sadie, I know we are not the best family you can have and I truly apologize. I just do not know how to be a mother. But remember, Sadie, whatever happened, I do love you." These words made me sadder.
When we arrived, Grandma told me to go upstairs and unpack my things while she spoke to my mother. When I saw a blue and green painted room with a huge window and a comfortable bed, I thought, Moving to Florida might not be that bad." I comforted my-self as I walked towards the window. I opened the curtains and saw sky-blue waves slowly washing away the sand on the beach and sea birds flying in the clear sky. The ocean was only a few hundred meters away from here.
After my mother left, Grandma softly touched my shoulder, “I want to take you to the place I called 'the Big Blue’. And I think you might like it." (I guess you could know where it is.)
Before I stepped on the sand I could smell the ocean. Together we enjoyed the sunset with a whole lot of yellow and orange. Suddenly she picked out the most beautiful shell I had ever seen in my life. It was almost gold, shining in the sunlight. I couldn’t move my eyes off it.
